Comment:

 Merged the diagnostic branch to master. Not backporting. A solution here
 will depend on getting good info from the log messages we added, and some
 insight about what to do about them.  It's still not too late to review
 those messages:  Please comment (or give me a patch) if you think there's
 more stuff we should be logging.
