 Thanks, this all looks plausible.  I'd like to specify this behavior in
 dir-spec.txt, but it might take me a bit until I can do that.  Can you
 keep a copy of these logs (January 2 and 3) just in case I have further
 questions?  It will never be as easy as it is now to witness this
 situation, mostly because the spec says that it MUST NOT happen.
