Comment:

 this has languished too long.  How about this very brute-force fix for
 0.2.3 and 0.2.4: branch "bug10849_023_bruteforce".

 And how about bug10849_025 for 0.2.5?

 rransom's fix also looks plausible to me for 0.2.3 and 0.2.4.
