Comment (by gk):

 The problem is probably that calling the function and calculating all the
 stuff three times (compared to doing that only once) is introducing enough
 delay on start-up that the resizing is visible. That's the fear I had in
 comment 10. If you have ideas on how to avoid that go for it :)
