 I get this problem too with 64-bit 3.0alpha4 on a newly installed Debian
 testing.

 I can make the problem go away by setting the environment variable
 {{{
 export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim
 }}}
 (e.g., in `~/.xsessionrc`), away from the default
 {{{
 export GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus
 }}}
 Ibus input still seems to work after this. `GTK_IM_MODULE` is normally set
 by Debian somewhere in `/etc/X11/Xsession.d/`.
