Comment:

 I ran into this issue today, and not knowing which add-on would cause it,
 went through disabling and re-enable all my add-ons one by one and
 restarting Thunderbird each time (that's after noticing it is fixed by
 starting in --safe-mode, hotting F8, starting in --safe-mode again).

 I also got in touch with the kind and helpful folks at irc.mozilla.net's
 #thunderbird, one of whom suggested:

 has to do should have the side
 > effect of re-enabling the message pane. With proper investigation, it
 might be worth filing a change-
 > request bug with Thunderbird about that.

 ...but also wrote:

 Personally I don't feel qualified to file this change request. I'm re-
 opening this bug, now, just for you to re-evaluate whether or not to file
 this change request (otherwise we do have a work-around for now, which
 isn't great since it comes with a privacy impact but it's okay I guess).
