Comment (by arma):

 Since you're on Debian, look in /etc/default/tor for the 'ulimit -c
 unlimited' line, and uncomment it.

 I believe the core file will show up in /var/lib/tor/

 and then you'll want the tor-dbg deb to get the symbols so gdb can read
 it.
