Comment (by dcf):

 The current state of this is: I have some changes on top of Ximin's
 bug9349_server_endpoints and an alternative design for the urlparam stuff.
 Ximin saw these changes, made some suggestions, and is waiting for me to
 merge my changes again and send them back for review.

 After that, we merge the branch, deploy on the primary facilitator, and
 close the ticket.
