 not about Tor having different incompatible escaping conventions for input
 and output of quoted strings.

 Unlikely.

 Depending on which hash function (and which key) Python is using, Stem
 will convert the sequence of characters “`\\t`” to either “`\<tab>`” or
 “`<tab>`”.
