Comment:

 Ok, I pushed a series of commits that should address the code review
 points to mikeperry/ticket8081, head
 1e5a1ae9ec1e6607832975e7290b17daf9b0f147. I haven't tested it yet. It also
 contains a bonus commit to fix a function name that annoyed me during my
 #5691 review.

 The autoconf check in nickm/double-0-check looks OK to me, but it's been
 about a decade since I've written an autoconf test.
