 If I tell it to drop the first 1-byte read on each connection, it gets up
 to "bootstrapped 15%" but no farther.  So this is affecting more than the
 first byte.

 ruebezahl and I have both been testing this on 64-bit hosts; I wonder if
 the architecture matters.
