 I should have mentioned that I have the AT&T branded version of McAfee
 anti-virus running on this machine.  I have it set to ask me before
 updating, and I normally allow it within a few minutes or hours.

 The real time scanning feature sometimes slows the entire machine down.  I
 have tried to configure it to leave Tor and Vidalia alone, but it still
 sometimes blocks Tor for some reason.
