 The thing to merge would, I believe, be my "bug5018" branch, which was
 against 0.2.4 in the first place.

 This looks like a safe backport to me, but I'd like signoff from arma too.
 I don't think it's necessary to delay calling 0.2.4 stable for this,
 either.
