 OP here. On further experimentation this might be a conflict with
 dnscrypt-proxy.exe in Windows 7. If the tor browser works, once closed,
 normal 'net fails and it is necessary to restart the dnscrypt-proxy.exe
 service. When that service is running it appears the tbb-firefox.exe hangs
 at times. Could it be conflicting? Or maybe a MitM?

 Anyone else running dnscrypt-proxy have trouble? It does run trhough
 127.0.0.1.
