 Another thing to try: send Tor a USR2 signal while this is happening to
 turn on DEBUG-level logs. I want to see what SSL_read is returning and why
 we aren't disabling that event.

 Oh hey; it's a connection_read_to_buf inside a
 connection_handle_write_impl.  Interesting...
