 ok; I can clear up that warning with a little AC_LANG_PROGRAM.  I'm still
 not sure this is the right approach, but as with so many things in
 autotools, the perfect is the enemy of the working.  Updating a new
 "bug6173", testing it in a couple places, and then merging.
