 Sure, let's try tooltips then.  It shouldn't be too hard to change that
 later if we realize we need more space.

 Hmmm.  I get the darker gray for both cases.  This is Firefox 14.0.1.  No
 clue why it doesn't use the lighter gray for the example.  Feel free to
 ignore if this is not an easy fix.
