 Took me a little while to try automake-1.9 , since my desktop doesn't seem
 to have one.  But my FreeBSD VM does, and it seemed to work okay.  So I
 bumped the requirement to 1.9.  Now I'm looking into an issue with out-of-
 tree builds starting with a clean checkout.
