 I can also get a clean reproduction with NewsFox, subscribing to an RSS
 feed like http://www.economist.com/feeds/print-sections/68/letters.xml
 with the Economist ruleset enabled.

 Giorgio's IOUtils patch isn't helping in that case either :(
