 It gets even more puzzling. I was just about to compare about:config
 entries between the two profiles, when I noticed that the link suddenly
 worked in both! There had been no change on my part (and I had ruled out
 cookies/chache before). The only thing I could think of was the semi-daily
 Firefox Aurora update.

 HOWEVER before reporting this issue as closed, I thought I would try
 "Translate this page" on a new Google search, and sadly the problem was
 back.
