 I wonder if we're seeing extra bad startup times because people are trying
 to launch their TBB from a slow USB key. I remember once upon a time
 people pointed out that Firefox from USB is especially slow because of all
 the tiny files it has to load. Is that still an issue? Does it have/want a
 ticket of its own?

 In the mean time, suggesting "don't run it from your usb key if you don't
 like the bootup speed" is not a crazy idea.
