 see.

 I'm merging my 4587 fix plus your fixes in the diff above, to make stars's
 issue better.  (Yes, I know this is still not right, but this should make
 it less b0rken than before.  I hope I can get to looking at all the
 proposed fixes on Thursday or Friday, when my brain gets out of "merge
 features" mode into "fix all the bugs!" mode.)
