And this was your go-to plan? :) For the record, I don't mind so much
about the changelog file not being updated. I've certainly messed up tags
before, so no worries. To me, though, there's really two issues here aside
from the release process itself: (1) someone declaring a release without
talking to the project owner first, and (2) someone who really shouldn't
have been tagging releases yet had sufficient access to do so in the first
place. The fact that someone can show up, make about a half-dozen (albeit
much appreciated) small patches and apparently have free reign over an
*entire* repository (not just trunk) and start tagging releases of other
people's projects is worrisome at best.

doing the tag/tarball-sign for stable releases?

Meh, between moving to a VCS I'm not particularly keen on, an 'alpha'
release plan I think is a bad idea for now and the latest 'stable' release
shenanigans, this has gotten to be more trouble than it's worth to me
personally. Someone from Tor (Andrew/Roger/Wendy probably?) should get in
touch with me (and most likely Justin as well), if they'd like, about
actually transferring Vidalia's copyright ownership to The Tor Project and
then y'all can tag whatever releases you want.
