 But the assert is still there, being problematic.  If I understand right,
 arma's suggestion was that the assert go away entirely, since it's not
 nice to crash.  And I'm not seeing a patch to fix the "smartlist_t* foo"
 thing.

 I can clean these up before merging, unless you want to fix 'em first.
