Hard to say. It doesn't really look like a bug on the metrics side.
Maybe something related to the webservers where these requests are
counted or a change to the mechanism how update pings are conducted?

However, it doesn't look like a sudden increase in user numbers.

Maybe a Tor Browser person would know better? I'm copying Georg and
Nicolas on this thread.
