Have you tried 'The Onion Box' (www.theonionbox.com)? Don't know if it fits your perception of 'lightweight', yet it provides a nice interface to monitor your relay - and runs without issues on a Raspberry Pi (Model B). Be sure to grab the latest files of 'version 2' ... which is still in development but quite stable & feature frozen meanwhile.
I'm about to release this branch in a couple of days as the new master.

I'll have a look on vnstat(i), the example on the given link looks like
useful.

There's another one I've found, "bandwidthd"
http://bandwidthd.sourceforge.net/
But when I see graph generated on your link, I think vnstat is more cool.
