Hi everyone!
On monday, the HOPE conference in NY happening on July 22-24 will open its CFP.
I will attend this event for which I think it's a great place to reach hackers, activist, journalist and so on in North America. I know some of you are planning also which is great. But I feel like we should also try to submit a talk there. In the last two (4 years time), there were no Tor talk at all.
There are plenty of subject we can talk about but I would also like not to repeat the 32c3 talks (at least not word for word). So, here it is, a thread so we can think about it.
Something that could be cool is: "I'm a Tor directory authority and here how that works." or <insert idea>.
I'm happy to "coordinate" this CFP effort if we think it's a good idea and we want to do it. So knowing who is going and who is willing to speak would be good :). I offer my service for that but it DOES NOT have to be me necessarly (also the more the merrier).
Cheers! David

Sounds interesting and I'll soon be in that part of the country. I don't know if I'll be able to get away from work at that time, but I'll certainly keep an eye on this. The 22nd is a Friday, which may be helpful.

Hello David,
Thanks for making the call for this. Is the CFP still open? Do you happen to have developed more ideas on what things we could perhaps talk about? I'm also going and I can talk about Library Freedom Project and our effort to bring online privacy to public spaces.
Only in the last year as I started going to more public gatherings, I've realized we at Tor are evolving so fast and everyone is excited to know more about what we do and how we're doing it. We could do updates on Tor in literally every single conference and I guarantee it's never gonna get old ;) but let's be more creative than that! :D
Another thing that came up on IRC yesterday, was the possibility of getting a booth (table) at HOPE for Tor, which remains Shari's and Roger's decision to make.
Anyways, I just wanted to say I'm in! Let's do this!
Best,

CFP is still open and I would like us to submit _very_ soon though. I had multiple talks with people about what we could talk about, here are some ideas:
- Directory Authorities. How it works? How does that even work? and How does that work? For most people, this is a complete black box and we could make it white! :)
- Hidden Services. Of course, that's always a hype for some reason.
- Guards. Sooo many new things coming up with guards for which we do research also that is very exciting. We could have an epic talk about how they came to be, how they work, attacks and how we are fixing them.
So those are technical talks because I mostly talked to tech people about it. Thus the question of what kind of talk do we want. An outreach one "State of the Onion at HOPE" or let's go more technical/research for a hacker crowd. However, 6 months has passed from congress so a Tor update would still be relevant (and HOPE is each two years).
I believe that most people at HOPE know about Tor and watched State of the Onion. It's quite a technical crowd often in my experience but I would lean towards a balance of outreach and technical.
Thoughts?
Another thing that came up on IRC yesterday, was the possibility of getting a booth (table) at HOPE for Tor, which remains Shari's and Roger's decision to make.
I wonder how useful that would be because we would basically be preaching the Tor gospel to our own community... ?
Also, volunteers to do that for two days can be rough :S...
Cheers! David

I like this! If we ended up submitting the onion service talk, I can provide some nice interesting use-cases for the security crowd.
Please let me know if I can be of any help.

That is precisely when it makes the most sense to have a table, with t-shirts and other swag available for donations! However, I don’t know about staffing it. Will we have enough people going to HOPE to create volunteer shifts?
FWIW, I think we should definitely do a state of the onion. People do want to know what we’re up to. Shari

The EFF and Freedom of the Press Foundation always seem to make a ton in donations from their HOPE booth. I plan to be at HOPE and could help out a bit if needed. And, Tor is really popular with the HOPE crowd. :D

I believe the conference overlaps pretty much completely with PETS, so I will miss HOPE. So it might be smart for you to take stock of who will be available as speakers / boothers.
That said, I think a HOPE talk and/or booth would be great, if you get enough people and momentum and so on to make it happen. I'm always talking about how we have too few "standard Tor speakers", and the best fix is to get more people some practice at doing it. Here is a great chance.

I’m interested in helping to give a hidden services talk, or maybe even other kinds of Tor talks. Plenty of interesting things to say, especially by late July.
I’m also open to helping with a booth if we have one.

Ok thanks all for the comments and offers for help! I've had helped from Nima here on this first draft of a talk at HOPE "a la State of the Onion" but not being that talk bit for bit.
https://pad.riseup.net/p/LI2hZ3VRjJzG
I'm also juggling with the idea of submitting a second talk on much more technical things because oh my we have so many things to say and there are lots of very curious, knowledgeable and wise people at HOPE on the technical side. Here are two ideas for a talk.
1) Directory Authority
Again, as I said in an previous email on that thread, this is a very interesting subject in my opinion and could be fascinating in many ways. Uncover this black box of Tor.
2) Onion "Hidden" Service
Classic but with the upcoming next generation work is a big step forward in fixing lots of issues of the current system. We'll also have me, special and possibly asn at HOPE which is a good crowd for a hs talk :). Furthermore, by the end of July, we'll have made progress on that front.
Please, cast your vote 1) or 2)? In all seriousness, the input from anyone will be useful here so we don't end up doing something uberly too complicated with a 55 minutes talk or even worse, very boring. Also, "a second talk is not needed" is also a valid answer if you think so.
(HOPE has yet announced details for a "booth" so pending...)
Thanks! David

I think both talks would be interesting, although the DirAuth talk is slightly more... academic? In the sense that attendees will leave the talk learning more about something, but won't be directly empowered to go do something. Whereas, leaving the Hidden Service talk, they'll feel "This is something that's happening right now! I can run a Hidden Service! I can educate people on how they've been changed!"
I'll also note that at RWC I had some long discussions with an i2p developer about the differences between i2p and Tor, especially as it relates to DirAuths and Path Selection. I admit to never really diving into i2p before, so it was very informative. I think it would be very interesting to have a talk that compares and contrasts those two systems!

The onionsite talk would definitely be the most crowd-pleasing, but a directory authority talk could explain one of the lesser-known aspects of little-t tor.
