INFO REQUESTED about ONION V3 DOMAIN AND HOSTING
hi I am new at Tor and wanted to know the following: - I have a site hosted on Godaddy. How can I make/get a tor onion v3 domain for my site? and how does it would work? would it be the site itself or a copy of the site? - how can I setup a .onion site with a custom domain (a copy of my site in this case) in the darkweb? will it work on linux only? would it be the domain only or the hosting too? - how do i host my own .onion site on the Tor network? do I need to make my own server somehow and somewhere? I noticed it takes Apache on linux, does this mean that the site would be hosted in a server INSIDE my own pc? definitely I am looking for a step-by-step explications on how make (duplicate a site or make a brand new one) a site domain and hosting on tor dark web. as I told I am new to tor and a bit confused, if you can let me know where I could find assistance and/or the know how thanks
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA512 Hello. See https://community.torproject.org/onion-services/setup/ for how to set up an onion service. You need to be running the server, so it can't be shared hosting. If you are using a GoDaddy shared hosting plan, you won't be able to set up an onion service. If you are using a VPS, you will. Do you have root access to the server? If so, you're good.
would it be the site itself or a copy of the site?
It would be the site itself.
how can I setup a .onion site with a custom domain (a copy of my site in this case) in the darkweb?
The domain cannot be customized except to a very limited extent (just a few characters). The rest is random by design.
will it work on linux only?
No, anything that can run Tor and can run a web server can host an onion service on it. Linux is just the most popular.
do I need to make my own server somehow and somewhere?
Yes, whether it's a dedicated server, a virtual server (VPS), or your home PC, it has to be running on some server.
I noticed it takes Apache on linux, does this mean that the site would be hosted in a server INSIDE my own pc?
If you set up the onion service on your own PC, yes. You don't have to, though. You can run it on another computer, like a VPS. The important question is whether or not you need the website to be *hidden*, or if you just want to have a copy of it that is accessable over the Tor network. If you want it to be hidden, then hosting a non- Tor copy of it defeats the point. Do you run the server itself or just use webhosting? If you host your server yourself, you have to install the tor software and configure a hidden service.
- how can I setup a .onion site with a custom domain (a copy of my site in this case) in the darkweb?
The domain is generated as it includes information about the key used by tor.
will it work on linux only?
The tor client can run on any supported OS, like Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, OpenBSD etc. It can run on a different machine than the web server itself.
would it be the domain only or the hosting too?
You have to provide a machine, you get the domain by generating the keys for your service, you do not need to register it like a common gtld.
- how do i host my own .onion site on the Tor network?
Your machine is part of the network and will distribute the information that this hidden service exist to the directories.
do I need to make my own server somehow and somewhere? I noticed it takes Apache on linux, does this mean that the site would be hosted in a server INSIDE my own pc?
This is one way to handle that. You can use and old PC sitting in your basement. The tor client doesn't need to be reachable from the internet directly, so it can be operated with IPv6 only on residential lines, behind SPI firewall or with IPv4-CGNAT.
definitely I am looking for a step-by-step explications on how make (duplicate a site or make a brand new one) a site domain and hosting on tor dark web. as I told I am new to tor and a bit confused, if you can let me know where I could find assistance and/or the know how thanks
First explain how you would like to handle the server situation. -- Gruß Marco Send unsolicited bulk mail to 1764687075muell@cartoonies.org

The Tor project has a brilliant step by step at https://community.torproject.org/onion-services/setup/ which should help get you started.
how can I setup a .onion site with a custom domain (a copy of my site in this case) in the darkweb?
You can generate .onion addresses en-masse till you find one you like; https://community.torproject.org/onion-services/advanced/vanity-addresses/
will it work on linux only? would it be the domain only or the hosting too?
Accessing onion services can be done on any device that runs Tor and/or the Tor Browser. The Tor daemon can run on Linux / Windows / *BSD, Android etc. Onion Services are a transport layer, you'd need a httpd to do the hosting/serving of the website itself.
does this mean that the site would be hosted in a server INSIDE my own pc?
If you want it to.

I assume you used their website builder [gwb] and/or web hosting [gwh] services, not a VPS you set up yourself. So I suppose you have access to some graphical tool, but not command-line access to the system. With such a setup, it is very unlikely that you can set up an onion domain (which is usually called an onion service) for your website without renting an additional VPS. [gwb]: https://www.godaddy.com/en/websites/website-builder [gwh]: https://www.godaddy.com/en/hosting/web-hosting If you just want a basic setup, I recommend the tutorial on Landchad [lnd]. It is a "copy-paste" style guide: it tells you what to do step by step, but doesn't explain what you are doing. It also implies that you are setting up the onion service on the same server hosting the website. [lnd]: https://community.torproject.org/onion-services/setup/ The community guide on setting up an onion service [sos] is a bit more explanatory. [sos]: https://community.torproject.org/onion-services/setup/
would it be the site itself or a copy of the site?
It can be either of them, depending on your setup. I would recommend to set it up to serve the same website from the same source, in order to avoid sync issues.
- how can I setup a .onion site with a custom domain (a copy of my site in this case) in the darkweb?
If you mean a domain you pick up, you basically can't. Onion addresses are generated cryptographically, so you can't choose them. They always are a 56-chars-long string (and only a-z and 2-7 chars are allowed), followed by ".onion". So you can't decide, for example, to use john-doe.onion. You can however generate "vanity addresses", which are onion addresses beginning with a substring of your choice - but it requires some time, increasing exponentially with the length of your substring. There is a community guide [vad] on this, too. [vad]: https://community.torproject.org/onion-services/advanced/vanity-addresses/
do I need to make my own server somehow and somewhere?
Yes. Some hosting providers may set it up and manage it for you, but I don't know any.

I recommend that you read the links I provided and try to understand as much as possible and just try. It will be tough, but that's the only way to learn :) You can ask further onion services-related questions in this mailing list or in the forum [tfo]. You will probably also need to read documentation for the operating system and server software you use for your website. [tfo]: https://forum.torproject.org/ If you need some tutoring - and you have a good supply of patience - I'd be happy to help you on this. -- Eldalië My public key is attached.
