If your goal is to keep you existing site public and ADD a .onion URL I suggest looking at:

https://onionservices.torproject.org/apps/web/onionspray/tutorial/

Tor acts as a proxy so you don't need a copy of the site it can be setup to route directly to an existing site.  In the generic examples of a hidden service show tor proxying to a webserver running on the same system but you can also point it at external URLs.
