TLRD: How would you like to see the space in the future? (this is a follow-up from irc://oftc.org/#onionspace in February) Dear Onionspace Users, Interest-eds and Wanna-Beeeees, its been an experiment to just drop this space into Berlin. I haven't followed it too much, but Mo leaves the impression that expectations haven't met. He'd wish that there would be more to happen. Everyone might has seen the chats in the channel about this in February. As I cannot write code but rather text, I take the burden of drafting somewhat of a first concept-note. So I kindly ask you: => How would you like to see the space in the future? Feel free to reply onlist or offlist - if the latter, pls inform me, how confidential I should treat your reply towards the others of the group. If it easier you can also reply/add to the following questions: (Half of them require a quick [yes|no|$option] only) - How do you use the space right now? - What do you like in it's current state? - What do you not like in it's current state? - How would you like to use the space in the future? - How would you like to have others using the space in the future? - Whats your deepest wish for the space? - Whats your DON'T for the the space? - Would you like to see more/less $things/$people? - How to you find it that the space hosts ppl overnight? - Do you want to have more/less often guests hosted? - Would you like to see the kitchen more in use, or not? - Would you like to have more tools / hands-on-working area? - Would you like to have more/less events, where it gets crowded? - Would you like to move more towards "hackspace"? - Would you like to move more towards "office space"? - Would you like to move more towards "coworking space"? - Would you like to have a combination of 2 or 3 of the above? - Would you like to see ppl there working on $RandomTech, or rather only/mainly on stuff for-the-better-world? - Would you like to see onionspace as a community, or rather not? - If community, what kind, what kind not? - What do you think about an "open day" for newbies? - What other questions could be added? I personally very much liked it as quiet, private and empty as it was in the time I've been here in February. I wouldn't want to change anything in particular (but those might have been already "crowded" days). I will gladly use it as "office space" during my rare times in Berlin, looking forward to it! (Next longer stretch might be in autumn only). Regarding the discussions during the time being I am very blank, which might be a feature - but also might annoy you ("oh dear, we had discussed this already multiple times!") - I'll take the risk :p I'd love to see your replies on the list so that we can all discuss and see where this will take us. Regards, sva.

- How do you use the space right now?
As an office (as my office is there :D)
- What do you like in it's current state?
Nope. It is used by only a few people and I would love to have it more open.
- What do you not like in it's current state?
People tend to leave a mess. Only some do some basic clean up but sometimes I came to the space and I had to tidy it for 40 minutes.
- How would you like to use the space in the future?
As an office, meeting place, event location.
- How would you like to have others using the space in the future?
yes, please!
- Whats your deepest wish for the space?
That it is a place where people meet and share knowledge, party together and get their things done.
- Whats your DON'T for the the space?
Become one of the many hackspaces we have already in berlin.
- Would you like to see more/less $things/$people?
I would love to see more people there and see the library used
- How to you find it that the space hosts ppl overnight?
It is OK for me as long as there is noone permanent living there :D
- Do you want to have more/less often guests hosted?
Host guests, I am fine with that
- Would you like to see the kitchen more in use, or not?
as there is no oen I think the use it has is OK.
- Would you like to have more tools / hands-on-working area?
Not sure about that.
- Would you like to have more/less events, where it gets crowded?
More events please.
- Would you like to move more towards "hackspace“?
nah.
- Would you like to move more towards "office space“?
I use it like this.
- Would you like to move more towards "coworking space“?
In a way, yes.
- Would you like to have a combination of 2 or 3 of the above?
I would love to have it as a place where people hack together, think together and share(!) the results. I would love to see some outcome which is in benefit for the public.
- Would you like to see ppl there working on $RandomTech, or rather only/mainly on stuff for-the-better-world?
better world stuff. but maybe the $randomtech is for the better world. Who knows?
- Would you like to see onionspace as a community, or rather not?
I have no strong feelings here.
- If community, what kind, what kind not?
-void -
- What do you think about an "open day" for newbies?
If someone™ takes care, please do so!
- What other questions could be added?
Should moking be allowed in the space? No. I am a smoker and I do not want smoke in the space. Cheers, tomate

If it easier you can also reply/add to the following questions: (Half of them require a quick [yes|no|$option] only)
- How do you use the space right now?
2-3 times a week for main and side projects.
- What do you like in it's current state?
It's focused on doing work.
- What do you not like in it's current state?
Sometimes people forget to clean up.
- How would you like to use the space in the future? - How would you like to have others using the space in the future?
I think the current uses are nice, I don't see the need for major changes (in terms of use).
- Whats your deepest wish for the space? - Whats your DON'T for the the space? - Would you like to see more/less $things/$people?
More people doing interesting and useful work.
- How to you find it that the space hosts ppl overnight? - Do you want to have more/less often guests hosted?
The current rate is fine. More is also OK.
- Would you like to see the kitchen more in use, or not?
It's OK at the moment.
- Would you like to have more tools / hands-on-working area?
I personally don't need it, people can already use the existing tables to do light hardware work, and I think anything more complicated would require a separate room for air / sound insulation and we probably can't do this.
- Would you like to have more/less events, where it gets crowded?
It's OK at the moment. More events in the evenings would also be OK, because I don't use the space during those times. More events in the days that use up half the space (so I can work in the other half) would also be OK.
- Would you like to move more towards "hackspace"?
Probably not, there are already hackspaces in Berlin.
- Would you like to move more towards "office space"?
Probably not, this sounds too restrictive.
- Would you like to move more towards "coworking space"?
I thought we are already a co-working space. I certainly would not like having bullshit-startup hipsters around, if that's what you meant.
- Would you like to have a combination of 2 or 3 of the above?
Being more like a social hackspace like c-base in the evenings is also OK, but I would not like people coming into the space during the day time just to play video games.
- Would you like to see ppl there working on $RandomTech, or rather only/mainly on stuff for-the-better-world?
I think there's a fine line here and it's hard to precisely specify this in advance. Sometimes people do stuff that will make the world better but they don't realise it, and sometimes people do bullshit stuff that they say will make the world better but is really just bullshit.
- Would you like to see onionspace as a community, or rather not? - If community, what kind, what kind not?
I think this is best answered later when there are more people using the space regularly to potentially call it a "community". The aim should be to focus on some topic, then hope that a community grows around it, rather than just "trying to build a community".
- What do you think about an "open day" for newbies?
It depends on what we're advertising to newbies. What do you have in mind?
- What other questions could be added?
[..]
I think people answering these questions should consider the fact that Moritz's foundation is paying ~€700-800 a month for the space. Private empty spaces are nice, and I also enjoy being alone in the space, but I think it would be better for other people also to be able to take advantage of these resources, and use them for something productive. (this is a follow-up from irc://oftc.org/#onionspace in February)
Dear Onionspace Users, Interest-eds and Wanna-Beeeees,
its been an experiment to just drop this space into Berlin. I haven't followed it too much, but Mo leaves the impression that expectations haven't met. He'd wish that there would be more to happen. Everyone might has seen the chats in the channel about this in February.
As I cannot write code but rather text, I take the burden of drafting somewhat of a first concept-note. So I kindly ask you:
=> How would you like to see the space in the future?
Feel free to reply onlist or offlist - if the latter, pls inform me, how confidential I should treat your reply towards the others of the group.
If it easier you can also reply/add to the following questions: (Half of them require a quick [yes|no|$option] only)
- How do you use the space right now?
When I am in Berlin I use the OnionSpace for working 4-5 days per week.
- What do you like in it's current state?
It's quiet and a good place to keep focused and get work done
- What do you not like in it's current state?
Not many people are using the space. I'm often the only person there.
- How would you like to use the space in the future?
I'd like more people to work with and to interact with at the space.
- How would you like to have others using the space in the future?
Keeping it for co-working during the day suits me. I'd be happy to have some other events there in the evenings or weekend.
- Whats your deepest wish for the space?
Building a healthy, sustainable community of people around the space
- Whats your DON'T for the the space?
I don't want it to turn into another hackerspace. There is enough of them in Berlin.
- Would you like to see more/less $things/$people?
Happy with the current things.
- How to you find it that the space hosts ppl overnight?
I think it's fine that the space hosts people overnight. I wouldn't like it if anyone was staying there too long-term (more than a few nights)
- Do you want to have more/less often guests hosted?
Okay with how it has been so far.
- Would you like to see the kitchen more in use, or not?
Okay for me
- Would you like to have more tools / hands-on-working area?
I think some more light electronics tools are useful. We already have soldering irons, multimeters, flashing clips. I don't see heavier equipment being needed there.
- Would you like to have more/less events, where it gets crowded?
Ideally events would be in the evenings or weekends. It can be hard to find other places to work comfortable when the space is booked for an entire week.
- Would you like to move more towards "hackspace"?
No
- Would you like to move more towards "office space"?
For like co-working.
- Would you like to move more towards "coworking space"?
Yes co-working with fellow-minded people. Not a start-up type place.
- Would you like to see ppl there working on $RandomTech, or rather only/mainly on stuff for-the-better-world?
for-the-better-world stuff, but I'm flexible for nice people who make the environment better.
- Would you like to see onionspace as a community, or rather not?
Yes I think we make it a good place to work regularly, then we can naturally build a loose community
- If community, what kind, what kind not?
I don't want to see a rigid community for now. We don't need formal membership, too many rules etc.
- What do you think about an "open day" for newbies?
Yes I think it's good to show more people. Maybe we should be careful to not have the space overloaded with new people if we are too public about a "free" co-working space. Regards, Donncha
