Hi folks, The Fung Forum, which is a Princeton-run event at the BCC in Berlin this coming Monday and Tuesday, is hoping to attract more of the practical sort of attendee (i.e. hackers). Project application: Syrian Archive, Mietlimbo (Prototype Fund projects)

Hi! We didn't yet define exactly how we would add people. I think it's a good idea, in cases where the "new folks" don't mind, to inform the list and then allow comments to be made off-list or on-list if people object for one reason or another. At the Prototype Fund kickoff meeting, two projects showed interest in using the OnionSpace. One is the "Syrian Archive", something which I think would fit perfectly well thematically, and also because their language is English (3 people), who some of you have already met: https://syrianarchive.org/ The other "application" is coming from a nice and friendly German, who I asked to write a brief intro for us. All those people want to use it as office space for mostly focussed work. I am looking for a space where I can work mostly on week days from ~noon - 6pm. When I'm working I prefer less talk and more focus on coding. Still, I would love to meet people, see what they are working on and maybe even get inspired and start hacking on something together. For my personal background, I have studied Cognitive Science (everything about brains, how to fake them with a machine and why you shouldn't (couldn't) do it), where I was particularly interested in collective intelligence / consciousness and whether internet technology might be a first step towards that. In general, I like coding (mostly web dev and stuff I build for my raspberry pi), reading about internet culture, politics, random things, Jazz, Funk and Dubtechno, art, light and sound and talking to nice people :) Hope to meet you all soon! TLRD: How would you like to see the space in the future? (this is a follow-up from irc://oftc.org/#onionspace in February) Dear Onionspace Users, Interest-eds and Wanna-Beeeees, its been an experiment to just drop this space into Berlin. I haven't followed it too much, but Mo leaves the impression that expectations haven't met. He'd wish that there would be more to happen. Everyone might has seen the chats in the channel about this in February. As I cannot write code but rather text, I take the burden of drafting somewhat of a first concept-note. So I kindly ask you: => How would you like to see the space in the future? Feel free to reply onlist or offlist - if the latter, pls inform me, how confidential I should treat your reply towards the others of the group. If it easier you can also reply/add to the following questions: (Half of them require a quick [yes|no|$option] only) - How do you use the space right now? - What do you like in it's current state? - What do you not like in it's current state? - How would you like to use the space in the future? - How would you like to have others using the space in the future? - Whats your deepest wish for the space? - Whats your DON'T for the the space? - Would you like to see more/less $things/$people? - How to you find it that the space hosts ppl overnight? - Do you want to have more/less often guests hosted? - Would you like to see the kitchen more in use, or not? - Would you like to have more tools / hands-on-working area? - Would you like to have more/less events, where it gets crowded? - Would you like to move more towards "hackspace"? - Would you like to move more towards "office space"? - Would you like to move more towards "coworking space"? - Would you like to have a combination of 2 or 3 of the above? - Would you like to see ppl there working on $RandomTech, or rather only/mainly on stuff for-the-better-world? - Would you like to see onionspace as a community, or rather not? - If community, what kind, what kind not? - What do you think about an "open day" for newbies? - What other questions could be added? I personally very much liked it as quiet, private and empty as it was in the time I've been here in February. I wouldn't want to change anything in particular (but those might have been already "crowded" days). I will gladly use it as "office space" during my rare times in Berlin, looking forward to it! (Next longer stretch might be in autumn only). Regarding the discussions during the time being I am very blank, which might be a feature - but also might annoy you ("oh dear, we had discussed this already multiple times!") - I'll take the risk :p I'd love to see your replies on the list so that we can all discuss and see where this will take us. New lock! New keys! Instructions! (Please return old keys.)

Hi everyone! It was sitting on the shelves for quite a while, but now thanks to the heroic efforts of Richi235 and Glaxx, we have a new eletronic lock! Basically, in addition to the hopefully known way to buzz yourself through the downstairs door, you can now unlock the (upstairs) office door _exclusively_ with a personalized token that you submit to an HTTPS endpoint available on the local network. This means you need to carry some device that can connect to the local network! We're not exposing the endpoint as onion service, since we don't want people to accidentally (or deliberately) open the door remotely -- we want to ensure some kind of physical presence. We had to exchange the lock, so please, if you have an old physical key, give it to some Berlin people or bring it to the Tor developers meeting and pass it directly to me. As of _today_, you will not be able to open the door with the physical keys. We reused quite a bit of code from our Augsburg hackerspace, so there is even an Android app that you can use to unlock the door. [At this point we don't know if it actually works, as it might rely also on a working SpaceAPI that returns the door state, which we don't have yet.] Code: https://gitlab.glaxx.net/glaxx/onionsphinkter/ Android App: https://github.com/openlab-aux/sphincter-remote/releases The idea is that in addition to your own personalized token, "regulars" will be able to hand out tokens with expiry date to guests. At the moment, only I can add tokens to the database. I will now go through the list of subscribers and only send tokens to people who I believe are currently using the space at least from time to time. I don't have very good visibility into who is actually using it, so if there's any people that I forgot about, please let me know. There's a lot of cool features we could build on top of this. For example, we should combine the buzzer and the upstairs lock into one interface, and add a UPS, but for now that's two separate pieces of infrastructure. Heya, Thanks tomate for the announcement. In line with that, the "OONI" team will use the space from Nov 7-13, with Nov 11-12 being the public hackfest: https://ooni.torproject.org/post/berlin-hackathon-2016/ I am tempted to just add some calendar plugin with ICS export to the wordpress install at renewablefreedom.org. We really need a calendar, but I did not find anything that I liked. In terms of features, we need the option to "block" any of the three rooms without disclosing what is happening to the public, it should have some useful (web) overview of the three different rooms, and allow people to easily "claim" spots without necessarily being able to edit other people's scheduled items.
