I have now (see Andrew Lewman's post and my reply).

I have added the following two lines to my privoxy config

forward-socks4a	/	127.0.0.1:9050	.
forward-socks5	/	127.0.0.1:9050	.

Now, when I click on the 'Test Settings' button in the Preferences dialog, Tor 
switches to 'enabled', but https://check.torproject.org/ tells me I'm not 
using Tor.
